Managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads during the summer transfer window so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Here, William Saliba is set to join Arsenal….
William Saliba is due to undergo his medical with Arsenal after a £27m deal was agreed with Saint-Etienne for the highly-rated centre-back, according to Football London.
We’ve been strongly linked with Saliba throughout the summer and were the early favourites to land the French Under-20 international after he was identified as a long-term replacement for Laurent Koscielny.
Tottenham tried to hijack our proposed move but the 18-year-old always favoured a switch to Arsenal with ESPN claiming Saliba has now agreed a five-year contract after being attracted to the project on offer at the Emirates Stadium.
Football London are one of several outlets who are reporting that Arsenal have agreed a deal with Saint-Etienne worth £27m and the player is now expected to undergo his medical before the move to north London is made official.
Once the transfer is wrapped-up, the report says Saliba will be immediately loaned back to Saint-Etienne for the upcoming campaign so Arsenal will have to wait another 12 months before finally getting their hands on one of French football’s most highly-rated defenders.
Saliba broke into the Saint-Etienne first team last season and put in some hugely impressive performances to help the club finish fourth in Ligue 1 with one of the best defensive records in the division.
Arsenal certainly need to improve their defence after our leaky back-line cost us a place in the top four last season so Saliba will be a welcome addition to the squad once he eventually links-up with his new team next summer.
