Manchester United have seen a bid for Ruben Dias rejected by Benfica as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer widens his search for a centre-back this summer, according to reports in Portugal via the Daily Mail.
Solskjaer has brought-in winger Daniel James and right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka so far this summer but the United boss is being tipped to land two more signings before the transfer window closes on August 8th with a midfielder and centre-back on the agenda.
Man Utd have been strongly linked with Harry Maguire but are struggling to agree terms with Leicester City as the former Premier League champions are demanding a world record fee for the England defender.
It looks like Solskjaer has now explored alternative targets as the Daily Mail are citing a report from O Jogo that claims Man Utd have seen a formal offer for Ruben Dias knocked back by Benfica.
The Portuguese outlet doesn’t reveal the precise details of United’s offer but they suggest the Manchester giants have to meet Dias’ £59.5m [€66m] release clause as Benfica are refusing to sell the centre-back for anything less.
Benfica are under no pressure to sell after raking in around €200m in transfer sales this summer so it seems Manchester United are going to have to meet the full value of Dias’ release fee if they’re to force the Portuguese giants into a deal.
And the Red Devils may not want to hang around for too long as O Jogo, via the Daily Mail, claims Benfica are trying to persuade Dias to sign an improved contract with the club that would see his release clause rise to £79m [€88m].
We’ll have to wait and see how things develop over the coming days but Dias would be an excellent signing if United could pull it off as the 22-year-old has developed a reputation as one of the best young defenders in Europe.

He came through the youth ranks at Benfica and is now establish in their first team while he’s also a regular with the Portuguese national team so I think he’d be a big upgrade on the likes of Phil Jones and Chris Smalling if United could lure him to Old Trafford.
