Manchester United are on the verge of sealing a mega double swoop for Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire following a breakthrough in negotiations, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.
Having already signed Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, Ole Gunner Solskjaer has been desperately trying to strengthen his midfield options and Fernandes has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Following weeks of speculation, Gianluca Di Marzio – who works for Sky Sports Italia – claims United are now on the verge of agreeing a deal for the Sporting Lisbon midfielder with the two club believed to be in advanced negotiations.
It’s not specified what the fee will be but Sport reported recently that Sporting valued Fernandes at around £63m [€70m] so this will be a sizable investment from Man Utd if they get the deal over the line.
Fernandes would add some much needed creativity to the United midfield as he contributed a staggering 32 goals and 18 assists for Sporting last season and he’s a regular with the Portuguese national team.
However, it remains to be seen how the 24-year-old’s proposed arrival at Old Trafford would affect Paul Pogba amid on-going speculation linking the Frenchman with a big money move to Real Madrid.
United are also hoping to strengthen their options in defence with Solskjaer reportedly chasing Harry Maguire all summer but they’ve been locked in talks with Leicester City over a fee in recent weeks.
Last week, the Independent reported that Man Utd were closing in on a deal that would cost £80m – £70m up front and a further £10m in add-ons – which would make Maguire the most expensive defender in history.
These reports were then played down by the Foxes before Maguire fuelled the rumours once again after missing training on Monday due to an apparent stomach problem.
However, Gianluca Di Marzio claims Man Utd have now found a breakthrough in negotiations with Leicester and have reached an agreement to sign the 26-year-old centre-back this summer.
Maguire has developed into one of the best defenders in the Premier League since joining Leicester from Hull two years ago and he should be an excellent signing for United as he’ll be a big upgrade on Phil Jones and Chris Smalling.
