Manchester United are prepared to bid £45m [€50m] to sign Samuel Umtiti after opening talks with Barcelona over a potential deal for the centre-back
We’re now at the business end of the summer transfer window and managers are working hard trying to strengthen their squads so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip from around the globe. Here, Man Utd are linked with Samuel Umtiti…
Manchester United are prepared to bid £45m [€50m] to sign Samuel Umtiti after opening talks with Barcelona over a potential deal for the French centre-back, according to Le10Sport.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been desperately trying to add a new central defender to his squad this summer and his need for reinforcements was heightened after Eric Bailly was ruled out for around 6 months with a serious knee injury.
Man Utd have been locked in talks with Leicester City to sign Harry Maguire but so far they’ve been unable to agree terms over a deal with the Foxes demanding a world record fee for a defender worth in excess of £80m.
With just over a week to go until the window shuts, it looks like Solskjaer has decided to look at alternative targets as Le10Sport claims Man Utd have now opened talks with Barcelona over a potential deal for Samuel Umtiti.
The French outlet says United are ready to put a £45.5m [€50m] offer on the table but Barca value the French international at nearer £54.5m [€60m] so the Manchester giants may have to dig a little deeper if they want to get a fee agreed.
We’ll have to wait and see how talks progress but Umtiti would represent a much cheaper alternative to Maguire and he has the potential to be a superb addition to Solskjaer’s squad if they can snap him up this summer.
The 25-year-old was highly-rated when he moved to Barcelona from Lyon in 2016 but injuries have hampered his progress at the Nou Camp over the past three years and he’s struggled to establish himself in the first team.
Umtiti made just 14 appearances in all competitions last season and is behind Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet in Ernesto Valverde’s pecking order so he could be open to a move to Old Trafford if he’s promised regular action.

If Umtiti could stay fit, he has all the attributes needed to be a top class centre-back and he could prove to be a shrewd piece of business by Man Utd if they end up luring him to the Premier League this summer.
