Manchester United are locked in talks with Lazio over a deal to sign Sergej Milinkovic-Savic as they prepare for the possible exit of Paul Pogba this summer, according to Marca via the Metro.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer recently wrapped-up the record signing of Harry Maguire with the centre-back following Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka in making a move to Old Trafford this summer.
The United boss is now focussing his efforts further up the pitch during the closing stages of the transfer window and the Manchester giants have been strongly tipped to bring in at least one midfielder before Thursday’s deadline.
Pogba continues to be linked with a move away from Old Trafford after publicly admitting he wants a new challenge earlier in the summer and the midfielder missed United’s final pre-season friendly against AC Milan on Saturday.
The official line is the 26-year-old is injured but his absence only fuelled speculation linking him with a move and the Metro are citing Marca as saying Real Madrid are primed to make another attempt to prise the Frenchman away from United.
Marca says Man Utd are already lining-up a replacement in-case it becomes impossible to keep hold of Pogba with the Spanish publication claiming the Red Devils are locked in talks with Lazio over a deal for Milinkovic-Savic.
The Serbian international has been strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford throughout the summer with Corriere dello Sport reporting last week that United had agreed personal terms with the midfielder ahead of a possible £83m [€90m] deal.
Lazio president Claudio Lotito has already publicly suggested the club will cash-in on Milinkovic-Savic if a suitable offer arrives and the 24-year-old would be an exciting addition to Solskjaer’s squad.
Milinkovic-Savic has developed into one of the most talented midfielders in Italian football during his time in Rome and he has the potential to improve even further under the tutelage of Solskjaer and his coaching staff over the coming years.
