We’ve had no shortage of breakout stars this year. Here are five who might just make a big impression next summer.

It’s a whole new ball game for Euro 2020. Unlike previous editions of UEFA’s premier international competition, the hosting honours are shared amongst a whole host of nations. We’ve had joint-host editions in the past but 2020 will take things a great deal further.

It’s a complicated system. The tournament will take place in 12 stadiums in 12 countries across Europe with different grounds hosting different stages of the competition. A quick look at a Euro 2020 stadiums list reveals that the Stadio Olimpico in Rome will play host to the opening match on 12 June 2020 with the final taking place at London’s Wembley Stadium a month later.

This new format certainly favours some countries over others. Host nations usually have the obvious benefit of playing on a familiar ground but that honour has now been shared. A look at the Euro 2020 fixtures shows that Countries like England, Germany, and the Netherlands are set to play at least three games on home soil. That has certainly affected the betting odds with those three nations at the top of the list of favourites along with France and Belgium.

As always, we’ll expect to see a whole host of Premier League players at the championships. It may be another six months before the tournament kicks off but we’ve already seen some players stake a claim for a place in their national squads. We’ve had no shortage of breakout stars this year. Here are five who might just make a big impression next summer.

Tammy Abraham

Few expect Tammy Abraham’s name to be towards the top of the Premier League’s top goalscorers list this season. The Chelsea man has already bagged 10 goals and 2 assists to put him above the likes of Sergio Aguero and Mohamed Salah. He’s a shoo-in for Gareth Southgate’s England squad after a breakout year for Frank Lampard’s Chelsea.

Çağlar Söyüncü

The Leicester man had to bide his time. Çağlar Söyüncü signed for the Foxes last summer but saw his playing time reduced to just 8 matches in all competitions last term. The departure of Harry Maguire freed up a spot which Söyüncü has grabbed with both hands. Already a regular for Turkey, the 23-year-old looks set for a breakout tournament.

Mason Mount

Another Chelsea man on the list is Mason Mount. Much like his manager, Mount followed up success at Derby Country with a lightning-fast start to life in the Premier League with the Blues. Mount has bagged four league goals from midfield already before grabbing his first for England in a qualifier against Kosovo. He’ll want a metaphoric seat on the plane next summer.

James Maddison

It would be a huge shock not to see James Maddison in the England side next summer. He did well last season but the former Norwich man has taken his game to a new level this term. He’s added a new level of creativity and is performing well in big matches. Maddison has grabbed goals against Liverpool and Arsenal this term and will be hoping for a starting spot for his country next summer.

Dan James

There haven’t been too many things worth cheering about for Manchester United fans this season. New boy Dan James has been one of them. The former Swansea City man has taken to the Premier League with ease and is relishing in the new-found responsibility for club and country. Along with Aaron Ramsey and Gareth Bale, the winger is part of a potentially-lethal frontline for Wales.
