How things stand: An unpredictable Premier League season

The Premier League was always inherently unpredictable. We’ve always known that the upset is the rule rather than a rare occurrence. However, lately, it has been a two horse race between Manchester City and Liverpool. The last season for the Reds should not be taken into account, as they looked more like a hospital than a football team. Which makes it necessary to categorize any predictions on the Premier League as follows:

• The champion

Harry Kane decided on the confrontation between the Citizens and Tottenham to set the league on fire and prove why he is perhaps the best English striker. Following the 3-2 defeat at the weekend, Man City sit on 63 points, while Liverpool are second on 57 points having played a game less. Their game in hand will be played on Wednesday against Leeds United who are fighting to avoid relegation. If Liverpool emerge victorious and move to within just 3 points of City, the showdown between the leaders at the Etihad on April 9th may well decide the title. Liverpool simply have to win that match as defeat would surely hand Manchester City another title.

What we have here are two equal sides. Which makes any odds to win the Premier League extremely difficult. Anyone’s guess is as good as anyone else’s. Since we still have a little more than a month before that epic clash at the Etihad, it’s best to wait until nearer the game before placing any bets.

• The contenders for the European competitions

Here the standings table shows the rest of the big 6 and a few surprises. Typically, England gets 7 seats in the Champions, Europa and Europa Conference Leagues. If we count the 2 already aforementioned as already taken, 5 remain to be contested by a total of 6 clubs. Which means one of them will miss out. The clear leaders of this group are Chelsea, followed by Manchester United, West Ham United and Arsenal. Wolverhampton Wanderers and Tottenham are close behind.

From this group, Spurs seem to be picking up pace after Antonio Conte took over. Manchester United are grinding out results under Ralf Rangnick so cannot be discounted. Arsenal are also on a good run of form and will be quietly confident of making a real push for fourth place. The unexpected entries of the Hammers and Wolves seem to display enough consistency to be considered as strong candidates to pick up a European place. It’s a fluid environment which requires advice from a team of professional tipsters  before any bets are placed.

An interesting issue may occur here with Manchester United. They are still participating in the Champions League. If they somehow manage to win that competition, they are guaranteed a place in the Champions League next season irrespective of their league finish.

The problem here lies in the number of postponed matches each club still has to play. The leaders of the group Brentford have played all 26 rounds. Norwich City being last have only one opportunity to close the gap through a rescheduled game. Newcastle United and Watford (the first being above and the latter being below the relegation zone) have 2 spare matches each. The unpleasant surprise of the season Everton are three matches behind and could move way above the danger zone. Perhaps the luckiest ones are Burnley. Four of their matches have been postponed and need to be rescheduled.

What makes the situation volatile is that most of the spare matches are between the contenders for relegation. In essence they will decide amongst themselves who stays and who goes.
