Here we take a look at some of the most expensive transfers of the 2022 window involving Premier League clubs including Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez

The 2022/23 Premier League season is well underway, and it’s been an enthralling start to the new campaign. Arsenal has been the surprise package so far as Mikel Arteta’s side currently lead the way having won seven of their eight matches so far. However, defending champions Manchester City are just a point behind and in formidable form, while Chelsea is looking rejuvenated under new boss Graham Potter. Liverpool has endured a disappointing start to the season, but it’s only a matter of time before they rediscover their best form to push up the table.

At the other end, newly-promoted Nottingham Forest has struggled on their return to the Premier League and currently sits bottom of the table – level on points with Leicester City. Wolves and Crystal Palace have also had poor starts while the pressure is mounting on West Ham boss David Moyes too. So plenty is going on at both ends of the table, and it’s clear the Premier League remains the most exciting division in European football. You only have to look at the sports streaming trends in the UK to see that Premier League football remains the most popular sport and that dominance is expected to continue over the coming years.

More and more of Europe’s top talent is coming to England, and we saw this once again in the summer when the likes of Erling Haaland and Darwin Nunez joined big Premier League clubs. Let’s take a look at some of the most expensive transfers of the 2022 window involving Premier League clubs:

Antony – Man Utd [£86m]

Manchester United was once again one of the big spenders in the summer and new boss Erik ten Hag landed one of his key targets when he splashed out £86m on Antony. The Brazilian winger arrived from Ajax on deadline day and signed a long-term contract at Old Trafford.

Darwin Nunez – Liverpool [£85m]

The Uruguayan international joined Liverpool from Benfica in a mega package deal worth a total of £85m including add-ons to become the club’s record signing. The young striker is yet to settle in the Premier League, but Jurgen Klopp is convinced he has the talent to be a huge success at Anfield.

Wesley Fofana – Chelsea [£75m]

New Chelsea owner Todd Boehly spent BIG during the summer, and Fofana was the club’s most expensive signing after they agreed to pay Leicester City a staggering £70m for the centre-back. Fofana only joined the Foxes in 2021, so they made a huge profit, but it remains to be seen whether he can live up to his price tag at Stamford Bridge.

Casemiro – Man Utd [£70m]

Man Utd desperately tried to sign a defensive midfielder in the summer and eventually agreed to pay Real Madrid £70m for Casemiro in what was perhaps the most surprisingly transfer of the window. The Brazilian forged a reputation as one of the best defensive midfielders in the world during his time at the Bernabeu and helped the club win five Champions Leagues.

Alexander Isak – Newcastle [£63m]

All eyes were on mega-rich Newcastle during the summer, and they eventually flexed their financial muscle after paying Real Sociedad £63m, including add-ons for Isak. The highly-rated Swedish striker was linked with a host of top European clubs, so it was something of a coup for Newcastle to land him.

Marc Cucurella – Chelsea [£60m]

Chelsea continued to revamp their defensive set-up after paying Brighton £60m, including add-ons for Cucurella. During his debut campaign at the Amex Stadium, the full-back impressed, and Chelsea managed to beat Man City to his signature this summer.

Erling Haaland – Man City [£51m]

We complete our list with arguably the most exciting transfer of the summer. Man City managed to fend off interest from all over Europe to win the race to sign Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. City got him at a steal due to a £51m release clause in his contract, and Haaland has already light-up the Premier League by scoring a staggering 14 goals in his first 8 games.

It’s promising to be another hugely exciting Premier League season at both ends of the table. Arsenal could force their way into title contention if they can maintain their early season form. Still, it will take a monumental effort to stop Haaland and City from retaining the trophy. The relegation fight is likely to be as tense as ever, with several teams in danger of the drop. Football fans also have the 2022 World Cup in Qatar to look forward to, and it’s certainly going to be different this year as it will take place in the winter. Many of this summer’s big Premier League signings will be showcasing their talents in Qatar, so it will be fascinating to see how it all plays out when the tournament begins in November.
