Everton in fierce battle to sign Sporting’s Geny Catamo

Everton are reportedly in a fierce battle with Premier League rivals over a deal to sign Sporting CP forward Geny Catamo, as per TEAMtalk.

After moving to Jose Alvalade Stadium in 2023, the 25-year-old initially featured as a rotational option. However, he played regularly last campaign, making 11 goal contributions in 45 appearances across all competitions.

The forward has enjoyed great success with the Portuguese giants in recent years, winning two Primeira Liga titles and a Taca de Portugal trophy.

Having proven his worth in club football, Catamo has secured his place in the Mozambique national team’s starting line-up.

Now, TEAMtalk claim that Everton are interested in the African, having been impressed by his recent eye-catching performances and have made checks before making a potential swoop.

However, the Toffees will have to overcome fierce competition to finalise the operation as Aston Villa, Fulham, Brentford and Brighton and Hove Albion are also in this race.

Sunderland are currently in pole position to seal the deal, with the player open to moving to the Stadium of Light. Catamo has entered the final two years of his current contract, and considering Sporting are a selling club, they are prepared to let him leave this summer.

Although he has a £51m release clause in his existing deal, the Lions are prepared to accept a discount deal of around £34m.

Catamo to Everton

Catamo is a left-footed right-winger by trait but can provide cover on the opposite side. He is quick, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas and also works hard without possession.

Everton decided to reinforce the right flank by purchasing Tyler Dibling from Southampton for a big fee last summer. However, he struggled to break into David Moyes’ starting line-up last season.

So, it appears Everton are considering signing a new right-sided forward. Catamo is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.

Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Everton should they purchase him. However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually manage to secure his services by defeating other clubs in this race.
