Manchester United and Arsenal have reportedly made late checks over a deal for Inter Milan striker Pio Esposito, as per Caught Offside.
After finishing third in the Premier League last season, the Red Devils have displayed promising performances under Michael Carrick during this pre-season.
Following a disappointing defeat to Wrexham, they have won the next two matches against Rosenborg and Atlético Madrid. This weekend, they are set to face reigning European Champions, Paris Saint-Germain.
Amid this situation, United have continued to explore options in the market to hand Carrick the necessary tools to challenge on all fronts in the next campaign.
Caught Offside claim that Man Utd are interested in bolstering the attacking department by purchasing Esposito and have made late checks over this transfer.
Apart from the Old Trafford club, Arsenal have also enquired about his availability as they appreciate his talent and potential. However, Inter don’t want to part ways with him and are close to tying him down to a fresh long-term contract until 2031.
The report state that even if Arsenal fail to buy Esposito, they are likely to remain interested in him and could make a move in the future.
Battle
CO claim that Arsenal identified Vinicius Junior as the primary target to upgrade the frontline, and after failing to secure his service, they have earmarked Julian Alvarez, Bradley Barcola and Ferran Torres as serious targets. However, purchasing any of them won’t be easy.
Arsenal currently have Gabriel Jesus, Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyokeres as options to deploy in the striker position. However, the Brazilian has entered the final year of his current contract and speculation surrounding his future has been emerging in recent weeks.
Gyokeres, on the other hand, displayed inconsistent performances in his debut Premier League campaign after joining from Sporting CP last summer. Havertz has struggled with fitness problems in recent months; as a result, Arsenal are planning to purchase a new striker.
Esposito, standing at 6ft 2in tall, is a talented player and would have been a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal or Man Utd had either club managed to secure his services this summer.
