Chelsea make enquiries over deal to sign Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara

Chelsea have made enquiries about a deal to sign Senegalese defensive midfielder Lamine Camara from Monaco this summer, according to Footmercato

Camara is another exciting talent currently making a mark in Europe after coming through Senegal’s prestigious Génération Foot academy, which has also produced Sadio Mané, Ismaïla Sarr and Pape Matar Sarr.

Interestingly, the quartet all followed the same career path, joining Metz youth teams in France, where they impressed before securing big-money moves away from the French club.

Camara first joined the Metz B team in February 2023, and after making an impression, he made his first-team debut two months later in the 3–0 victory over Bordeaux in Ligue 2.

While he featured sparingly in the remaining month of that season, he became a regular in the starting lineup following the club’s promotion to Ligue 1 for the 2023-24 season, where he made 31 appearances before joining Monaco the following season.

Since his move to Monaco, the 22-year-old has established himself as one of the most exciting midfielders in France, particularly last season, when he won a sky-high 6.02 duels per 90 minutes in Ligue 1.

It’s no surprise his performances have drawn keen interest, with Footmercato reporting that Chelsea have made enquiries over a deal to sign Camara this summer.

Enzo Fernandez replacement?

The report adds that Xabi Alonso’s side appreciate the defensive midfielder’s profile, and the Blues’ scouts have now placed him at the top of their transfer shortlist.

While the London giants are expected to monitor the situation closely, the club must first offload at least one midfielder before making a move for Camara, Footmercato adds.

However, Chelsea are set to face stern competition from Manchester United and Liverpool, while Nottingham Forest and Crystal Palace, who have already submitted a formal offer, are also in the race for Camara, as per the French outlet.

Amid swirling transfer rumours surrounding Enzo Fernandez, it is understandable why Chelsea are exploring a move for Camara as a potential partner for Moises Caicedo heading into the next campaign. The Senegalese may have earned a reputation for his duelling and tackling prowess. Still, his passing is also impressive, as shown by his 51.6 accurate passes per 90 in Ligue 1 last season, slightly more than Fernandez’s 50.6 in the Premier League.

Should the Argentine depart, Camara would be a good option to replace him, and the club will need to submit a concrete offer, as Monaco are likely to demand a fee above his £34m Transfermarkt valuation.
