Tottenham Hotspur reportedly remain keen on signing Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo, as per Caught Offside.
The 27-year-old came into the spotlight, having displayed impressive performances for PSV Eindhoven. Having been attracted by him, the Reds decided to purchase him in January 2023.
The Dutchman has enjoyed a successful time at Anfield in recent years, winning a Premier League title and Carabao Cup. However, he displayed inconsistent performances last term, scoring nine goals and registering six assists in 52 appearances across all competitions.
Still, he managed to secure his place in the Netherlands’ World Cup squad. Now, Caught Offside claim that Tottenham are keen on the Liverpool star and are actively working to secure his services.
However, the Reds don’t want to allow Gakpo to leave before purchasing Paris Saint-Germain duo Bradley Barcola and Ibrahim Mbaye. But the Merseysiders have been struggling to reach an agreement with Les Parisiens to sign Barcola.
Newcastle United also expressed their interest in Gakpo but have been put off by the high valuation. Bayern Munich, meanwhile, wanted to sign Gakpo last summer but haven’t formalised their interest in this window.
The report state that alongside Gakpo, Tottenham are prioritising signing Manchester City forward Savinho and are also actively working to secure his services.
Gakpo to Tottenham
Gakpo is a 6ft 4in tall right-footed left-winger. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, can finish off his chances, and is efficient in creating opportunities for fellow attackers.
Tottenham currently have Mathys Tel, Wilson Odobert, Dejan Kulusevski and Mohammed Kudus as options to deploy on the flanks. However, apart from Tel, other forwards have been struggling with fitness problems.
So, Spurs could do with upgrading the flanks, and Gakpo, valued at around £51m by Transfermarkt, could be a shrewd acquisition as he is a talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the North London club eventually manage to lure the Netherlands international away from Anfield before the end of this transfer window.
Meanwhile, Tottenham are set to commence their new Premier League campaign against Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium next weekend.
