How to Build Fairer Teams for Weekly Amateur Football
There is no perfect formula for creating balanced football teams, but there are several ways to make the process considerably more reliable.
For anyone who organises a regular amateur football game, getting enough players is only half the job. Once everyone has confirmed, another problem begins: how do you divide them into two teams that will actually produce a competitive match?
It sounds simple. Put the best player on Team A, the second-best on Team B, continue alternating names, and start playing.
In practice, that approach often fails.
Two teams can look equally strong on paper and still produce a one-sided game. Player positions matter. Goalkeepers matter. Playing styles matter. And in a regular group, organisers also have to account for changing availability, improving players and what happened in previous matches.
There is no perfect formula for creating balanced football teams, but there are several ways to make the process considerably more reliable.
Start With Player Ability, Not Random Selection
Random team selection is fair in one sense: nobody controls the outcome.
But random does not mean balanced.
Imagine a group of ten players containing three particularly strong players. A random draw could easily put all three on the same five-a-side team. The selection process was unbiased, but the resulting match probably will not be.
For casual one-off games, that may not matter. For a group playing every week, repeated mismatches quickly become frustrating.
A better starting point is to give each player a rough ability rating.
It does not need to be sophisticated. A simple scale can already help distinguish stronger, average and developing players.
The objective is then to minimise the difference between the combined strength of the two teams.
For example, if the total estimated strength of Team A is 350 and Team B is 347, that is generally a better starting point than teams with totals of 390 and 307.
The numbers are not supposed to predict exactly what will happen. They simply give the organiser a more consistent basis for making the initial split.
Do Not Treat Every Player With the Same Rating as Identical
Ratings alone cannot describe a footballer.
Two players might both be considered 70 out of 100 while contributing completely different things to a team.
One might be a defender who reads the game well but rarely scores. Another could be a quick attacker who creates chances but offers little defensively.
If both teams have an identical total rating but one contains nearly all the defenders and the other contains most of the attacking players, the game may still feel unbalanced.
This is why positions should be treated as a second layer rather than ignored completely.
You do not need to assign everyone an exact tactical role. Even broad categories such as goalkeeper, defender, midfielder and attacker can reveal obvious problems in a proposed draw.
The rating provides the starting point. The composition of each team provides the reality check.
Goalkeepers Can Change Everything
Goalkeeper strength is particularly important in small-sided football.
In an eleven-a-side match, an individual goalkeeper is one player among eleven. In five-a-side, the goalkeeper represents 20% of the team on the pitch.
That makes differences between goalkeepers much more influential.
If one side has a regular goalkeeper and the other has an unwilling outfield player taking turns in goal, two otherwise balanced teams may not be balanced at all.
Organisers should therefore consider goalkeepers separately when reviewing a draw.
Where possible, put comparable goalkeepers on opposite teams. If that is impossible, the difference can sometimes be compensated for elsewhere in the squads.
The same principle applies to groups without permanent goalkeepers. If players rotate in goal, make sure one team does not accidentally contain every player who is comfortable playing there.
Avoid Concentrating the Strongest Players
One common mistake is looking only at total team strength.
Suppose two teams both have a total rating of 350.
Team A could contain ratings of:
90, 85, 65, 60, 50.
Team B could contain:
72, 71, 70, 69, 68.
Mathematically, the teams are very close.
On the pitch, however, they may behave very differently.
Team A has two players capable of dominating the game individually. Team B is much more evenly distributed.
Depending on the format and playing styles, either structure could have an advantage.
This is why the strongest players should usually be distributed between the teams rather than allowing several of them to cluster together simply because the totals still match.
For regular groups, organisers often learn this intuitively. A player may combine particularly well with another, or two strong attackers together may be considerably more dangerous than their individual ratings suggest.
The goal is not mathematical perfection. It is to avoid obvious concentrations of strength.
Use Previous Matches as Feedback
One of the biggest advantages of organising the same group repeatedly is that every match gives you new information.
If a game ends 10-1, something probably went wrong with the team selection.
That does not necessarily mean every player rating was incorrect. Perhaps one team lacked a goalkeeper. Perhaps several players performed unusually well or badly. Perhaps the playing styles simply produced a poor matchup.
But the result should still influence future decisions.
This is where recurring groups have an advantage over one-off pickup games. Organisers can gradually learn which combinations produce competitive matches.
Instead of treating every weekly draw as an isolated event, previous games can form a feedback loop:
create teams → play → observe the result → adjust → create better teams next time
Over enough matches, this is far more useful than repeatedly starting from scratch.
Ratings Should Be Allowed to Change
A static rating eventually becomes a bad rating.
Players improve. Others lose fitness. Someone returning after six months away may not initially perform at their previous level. New players are especially difficult to judge from one appearance.
For that reason, player strength should be treated as an estimate that evolves over time.
An organiser doing this manually might adjust ratings occasionally after observing several games.

The important principle is the same whether the process is manual or automated: ratings should respond to evidence rather than becoming permanent labels attached to players.
Be Careful With Constant Manual Adjustments
Once teams have been generated, there is always a temptation to keep changing them.
“This team looks stronger.”
“Move him over there.”
“They played together last week.”
“Those two shouldn’t be on the same side.”
Some manual judgement is useful. Too much can defeat the purpose of having a consistent balancing process.
If the organiser changes five players after every draw, personal perception becomes the algorithm again.
A better approach is to make manual changes only when there is a clear football reason — for example, no goalkeeper on one side or an extreme positional imbalance.
Then play the match and use the result as another piece of evidence.
Attendance Makes the Problem Harder
Weekly football groups rarely have exactly the same squad available every time.
One week there may be ten players. The next week twelve. A strong player cancels at the last minute and is replaced by someone completely new.
This means organisers are not really solving the same balancing problem every week.
They are solving a new version of it with a changing pool of players.
That is another reason fixed combinations such as “these five always play together” often become impractical.
A useful balancing system needs to work with whoever is actually available that week.
Confirm attendance first, establish the final player pool, and only then create the teams.
Otherwise every late cancellation can force the entire process to begin again.
What Does a Good Draw Actually Look Like?
A good draw does not guarantee a draw on the scoreboard.
Football contains too much randomness for that.
A balanced match can finish 6-2 because one team was unusually clinical. A supposedly weaker team can win because its players communicate better. A goalkeeper can have an exceptional game.
The purpose of balancing is therefore not to predict the final score perfectly.
It is to create a reasonable starting point where both teams have a realistic chance of winning.
A good team selection usually has several characteristics:
- Similar overall player strength
- Strong players distributed between the sides
- Reasonable positional balance
- Comparable goalkeeping options
- No obvious concentration of attacking or defensive quality
- Adjustments informed by previous matches
If those conditions are met, the organiser has done most of what can reasonably be done before kickoff.
The rest is football.
Consistency Matters More Than Perfection
There will never be a perfect method for dividing amateur football players.
Even professional football teams with analysts, coaches and enormous amounts of performance data cannot predict exactly how a match will unfold.
For amateur organisers, the objective should be simpler: make the process fair, repeatable and capable of improving over time.
Start with approximate player ability. Check positions and goalkeepers. Avoid concentrating the strongest players. Learn from previous results. Update your assumptions as players change.
Most importantly, use the same basic principles every week.
When players understand that teams are created through a consistent process rather than one person’s preference, the weekly debate over whether the teams are fair becomes much easier to manage.
And that leaves more time for the part everyone actually turned up for: playing football.
