Chelsea eye surprise swoop to sign Marcus Rashford

Marcus Rashford Manchester United

Chelsea are reportedly weighing up a surprise swoop to sign Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, as per the Independent.

After falling out with former United manager Ruben Amorim, the 28-year-old’s future seemed all but over at Old Trafford. Initially, he joined Aston Villa on loan in January last year before signing for Barcelona on yet another loan the following summer.

However, the Blaugrana decided not to purchase him permanently, although he showcased his productivity in La Liga last term, scoring 14 goals and registering 11 assists across all competitions. Having enjoyed a resurgence in Spain, Rashford has regained his place in the England national team.

Following Amorim’s departure, Michael Carrick has been appointed as the United boss. He has decided to keep the forward at Old Trafford for squad depth, having qualified for this season’s Champions League.

However, the Independent report that Chelsea are interested in signing a new versatile forward if they manage to complete enough outgoings over the coming days and could make a move for Rashford.

Rashford is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2028. So, United are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they opt to part ways with him.

Rashford is a left-winger by trait but is also comfortable on the opposite side. Moreover, he can provide cover in the CF position if needed. He is quick, technically sound, can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas, and is efficient at taking set-pieces.

Moreover, he has an eye for long-range passing and can deliver excellent crosses from the flanks. He is a Premier League-proven player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.

Therefore, the Englishman might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea should they purchase him. However, the Blues have purchased Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa this summer, and he has enjoyed a bright start to this season.

Moreover, Chelsea have Jamie Gittens as an option to deploy on the left flank. So, they don’t need to sign a new left-winger this summer, especially given that they won’t be playing European football this season.

Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether the West London club will eventually make a move to sign Rashford before Tuesday’s transfer deadline.
