Everton showed an interest in signing Aston Villa centre-forward Tammy Abraham on deadline day, according to BBC’s Sami Mokbel.
Signing a centre-forward was part of Everton’s agenda for the summer. The Merseyside club had already bolstered several other positions, like in midfield, where Hayden Hackney, Christian Nørgaard, and Merlin Röhl’s initial loan move was made permanent.
In defence, expectations were high that the club would bolster its fullback ranks, but only Ainsley Maitland-Niles arrived on deadline day.
In attack, the club also triggered the buy option clause for Tyrique George, while Brennan Johnson joined on a straight swap deal with Dwight McNeil going the opposite direction.
Arguably the best deal of the summer was bringing back Jack Grealish after his impressive first loan spell at the club last season.
However, the club were keen on adding a centre-forward and even sold Beto to free up space for another forward to compete with Thiero Barry up front.
Among the options linked, BBC’s Sami Mokbel claims Everton showed interest in making a late move to sign Villa’s Abraham on loan on deadline day.
However, the 6ft 4in centre-forward rebuffed the offer to remain at Villa Park this summer, according to the journalist.
Abraham rebuffed Everton’s loan move
Everton will hope to record consecutive victories at the Hill Dickinson Stadium for just the second time when they host Manchester United on Sunday, September 6.
The Toffees have made a promising start to the campaign, opening with a 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace before following it up with a 1-1 draw away at Bournemouth. James Tarkowski rescued a point in that game with an expertly taken late equaliser after a corner.
Sandwiched between those two league results was a convincing 4-0 Carabao Cup win against Preston North End. Across their five matches, the Toffees have found the net nine times while conceding just three goals.
With Abraham, who would have cost much less than his £15m Transfermarkt valuation, rejecting a move to Merseyside, Barry is the only natural centre-forward heading into the game. David Moyes will hope the Frenchman continues his fine form, having netted four goals across all competitions already this season, including a hat-trick in the EFL Cup against Preston.
