Liverpool explored deal to sign Marco Palestra this summer

Liverpool reportedly explored the possibility of signing Marco Palestra this summer, as per The Athletic.
Following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s move to Real Madrid, the Reds decided to reinforce the right-back position by purchasing Jeremie Frimpong last summer.
However, the Dutchman has struggled to find his feet in the Premier League. Conor Bradley is another right-back option Liverpool currently have, but the youngster has been out injured over the last few months.
As a result, former manager Arne Slot used Dominik Szoboszlai and Curtis Jones as auxiliary right-sided defenders last term, although they are midfielders by trait. But Jones has joined Inter Milan permanently this summer.
The Merseyside club have signed Ronald Araujo on loan from Barcelona, and he can provide cover in the right-back position, although he is a centre-back by trait.
Now, The Athletic report that Liverpool wanted a new right-back this summer and explored the possibility of signing Palestra from Atalanta. However, Andoni Iraola’s side ultimately decided not to make a move for him as they prioritised investing their money to revamp the flanks following Mohamed Salah’s departure.
The Anfield club even failed to generate funds from player sales, and Chelsea eventually bought Palestra for a fee of around £43m.
Palestra to Liverpool
The 21-year-old is a right-footed versatile defender. He is a right-back by trait but is also comfortable in the RWB position. Furthermore, he can provide cover on the opposite side if needed.
The Italian is quick, technically sound, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and efficient in delivering excellent crosses from the flanks. Moreover, he is solid in defensive contributions.
The youngster joined Cagliari on loan from La Dea last season, making five goal contributions and keeping six clean sheets in 37 Serie A appearances.
Palestra is a highly talented player and possesses the potential to reach the top. Therefore, he would have been a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool had they managed to secure his services this summer.
Meanwhile, following a 2-1 victory over Atletico Madrid in the opening Champions League fixture, Liverpool are set to face struggling Fulham in the Premier League this weekend.
