Liverpool were interested in signing PSG’s Nuno Mendes

Liverpool were reportedly interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain defender Nuno Mendes, as per The Athletic.

The 24-year-old initially moved to Parc des Princes from Sporting CP on loan back in 2021 before the deal became permanent the following year.

At first, the Portuguese took time to settle into his new surroundings before establishing himself as one of the best left-backs in the world in recent years.

Mendes has enjoyed great success in the French capital, winning five Ligue 1 titles, two Champions League trophies and numerous other major cup competitions.

In 40 appearances across all competitions, the defender scored six goals and registered seven assists last campaign. Moreover, he helped his side keep seven clean sheets.

Having proven his worth in club football, Mendes has established himself as an undisputed starter in the Portuguese national team’s starting line-up.

Now, The Athletic report that before signing Milos Kerkez last summer, Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes initially targeted Mendes as an ideal option to strengthen the left-back position.

The Reds even believed securing his services would be feasible. However, Mendes ultimately decided to stay at PSG by signing a new long-term contract until 2029.

Therefore, the Anfield club opted to buy the Hungarian international from AFC Bournemouth, but he endured a disappointing debut campaign last term.

Mendes is an attack-minded left-back and is also comfortable in the LWB position. He is quick, strong, technically sound, and can dribble past opposition defenders in tight areas.

Moreover, he, valued at around £69m by Transfermarkt, is efficient in delivering excellent crosses from the flank, possesses powerful shots, and is excellent in defensive contributions.

Mendes has proven his worth at the highest level and hasn’t reached his prime yet. Therefore, he would have been a great coup for Liverpool had they managed to secure his services.

Meanwhile, after letting Andrew Robertson go for free this summer, Liverpool have decided to keep Kostas Tsimikas, who spent a season-long loan at AS Roma last campaign, to support Kerkez.

However, the former Bournemouth star has continued to look shaky this season, while Tsimikas has entered the final year of his current contract. So, Liverpool might have to sign a new left-back next year.
