Liverpool are reportedly working on a deal to sign AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara, as per Football Insider.
After appointing Andoni Iraola as the new manager, the Reds have displayed inconsistent performances thus far this season. Having defeated Atletico Madrid in the opening Champions League fixture, Liverpool overcame Tottenham Hotspur’s challenge in the Carabao Cup third-round fixture.
However, they have won only one out of four Premier League matches, sitting in mid-table with six points. Now, Iraola is set to face his former club, AFC Bournemouth, in the league this weekend.
Meanwhile, despite selling Curtis Jones this summer, Liverpool decided not to buy a new midfielder. As a result, the Spanish boss currently has Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Trey Nyoni and Wataru Endo as deeper midfield options.
However, the Japanese international has found himself on the periphery in recent years, while Nyoni is still very young and needs time to develop.
Now, Football Insider state that Liverpool are considering reinforcing the midfield department in January and have assessed several options but have identified Camara as the leading target.
Iraola’s side are working on a deal to sign the African and have already held talks with the player’s representatives to persuade him to join.
The 22-year-old came very close to joining Chelsea this summer, but Monaco ultimately blocked the transfer, which made the player’s agent furious, but the midfielder is focused on helping his side. However, he could become available in mid-season.
Camara to Liverpool
Camara is valued at around £34m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2029. Therefore, Monaco are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in.
He is a right-footed defensive midfielder by trait but can provide cover in the box-to-box role if needed. Camara is a talented player and possesses high potential.
Moreover, he possesses the necessary physical attributes to flourish in the Premier League. Therefore, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually manage to secure his services in the upcoming winter transfer window.
