Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly interested in signing Feyenoord midfielder Gjivai Zechiël, as per TEAMtalk.
After helping the Lilywhites avoid relegation on the final day last term, Roberto De Zerbi decided to revamp the squad this summer. The Italian boss upgraded the engine room by signing Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes for a huge amount of money.
However, Spurs allowed Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr to leave. Meaning they currently have Tonali, Fernandes, Rodrigo Bentancur, Conor Gallagher, Lucas Bergvall and Archie Gray as options to deploy in the deeper midfield positions.
But Fernandes has displayed average performances thus far this season, while Gray has been providing cover in the right-back position amid Pedro Porro’s recent fitness problems.
Tottenham have endured a dire start this campaign, languishing at the bottom of the Premier League table with two points from five games. Moreover, they have been knocked out of the Carabao Cup by Liverpool.
So, it appears Tottenham have started exploring options to strengthen the squad further next year. Now, TEAMtalk claim that Tottenham have expressed their interest in Zechiël after being impressed by his recent eye-catching performances.
Apart from the North London club, Liverpool, Brighton and Hove Albion, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest are also in this race. However, Chelsea are currently in pole position to seal the deal.
Zechiël to Chelsea
Following Enzo Fernandez’s departure on deadline day, Chelsea came close to signing Lamine Camara but AS Monaco blocked the transfer.
So, the Blues are considering signing a new midfielder next year. Apart from the 22-year-old, Chelsea are also interested in Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace.
However, the report state that Feyenoord don’t want to let Zechiël, valued at around £9m by Transfermarkt, leave, with his existing deal set to run until 2029.
The Dutchman is a box-to-box midfielder by trait but is also comfortable in the deep-lying playmaker position. He has enjoyed a stellar start this season, making nine goal contributions in seven Eredivisie appearances.
Having shown glimpses of his qualities in club football, Zechiël has secured his place in the Netherlands squad for the September/October international fixtures.
He is a talented player and could be a shrewd acquisition for Tottenham should they eventually manage to secure his services by defeating other clubs in this race.
