Liverpool are reportedly interested in re-signing Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Tyler Morton, as per TEAMtalk.
After coming through the Reds’ youth system, the 23-year-old made his first-team debut back in 2021. However, he struggled to break into the starting line-up.
As a result, Morton went out on loan on a couple of occasions to play regularly and develop his career before moving to Groupama Stadium permanently last year.
The youngster enjoyed a promising debut campaign in Ligue 1 last term, making five goal contributions in 29 appearances. He even helped his side qualify for European football.
This season, Morton has continued to deliver eye-catching performances, guiding his side in a title charge. Lyon are currently second in Ligue 1 with two points behind league leaders AS Monaco.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that Liverpool are considering signing a new midfielder next year and have been monitoring Morton’s development before making a potential swoop.
Apart from the Anfield club, Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace, Brighton and Hove Albion, Sunderland, Newcastle United and Everton are also in this race.
Morton to Liverpool
With the player’s existing deal set to run until 2030, Lyon are in a strong position to demand a big fee if they are forced to cash-in, and he is valued at around £26m by Transfermarkt. The report state that Liverpool hold a 20% sell-on clause for the midfielder.
Morton is a 6ft 1in tall right-footed defensive midfielder but can provide cover in the box-to-box role if needed. He is technically sound, tidy with possession, has an eye for long-range passing and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Following Curtis Jones’ move to Inter Milan, Liverpool currently have Ryan Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai, Wataru Endo and Trey Nyoni as midfield options.
However, Endo has found himself on the periphery, while Nyoni is still very young and needs time to develop. So, Liverpool could do with signing a new midfielder.
Morton is a talented player and possesses high potential. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Liverpool should they purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the Merseyside club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services next year.
