According to Football Insider, Manchester United retain an interest in signing Sunderland striker Brian Brobbey ahead of the winter transfer window.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with the Netherlands international when Erik ten Hag was the manager in 2022. The Dutch tactician wanted to bring his compatriot to Old Trafford, but Brobbey chose to return to Ajax from RB Leipzig after a short-term loan stint.
Man United have continued to monitor his progress over the past four years and Football Insider claim that they retain an interest in signing the 24-year-old. Sunderland have no plans to part ways with him in January, but may struggle to resist if a suitable offer comes in.
Unlikely deal
Brobbey signed for the Black Cats from Ajax for £21.6 million last year. He played second fiddle to Wilson Isidor during the start of the campaign but became a more influential figure in the starting XI as the season progressed.
This has contributed to him securing a starting role this term. The Dutchman has been impressive in every Premier League game. He proved a menace for Arsenal with his supreme hold-up play, though the Gunners eventually won 2-0.
Against Manchester City, the former Ajax man scored a fantastic hat-trick in a 5-3 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. Brobbey has since picked up a painful hamstring injury on Netherlands duty, which could hamper his chances of a winter move.
The striker looked visibly in pain during the Nations League opener against Germany, and the early indications are that he could be sidelined for several weeks. He may also require plenty of training sessions to get back to his recent form.
Keeping that in mind, a mid-season transfer appears unlikely on the cards for any price. United may continue to monitor him for the remainder of the campaign before weighing up a possible move during the summer transfer window.
The club are quite open to parting ways with Brobbey’s compatriot Joshua Zirkzee. Zirkzee, who was recently called up to replace Brobbey in the Dutch squad, has been a fringe player and looks likely to be sold by United next year.
