Liverpool and Arsenal are reportedly showing interest in signing Real Madrid defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, as per TEAMtalk.
After coming through the Reds’ youth system, the Englishman established himself as an undisputed starter, helping Liverpool win two Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and several other major cup competitions.
However, he decided to take a new challenge in his career by joining Los Blancos last year. The 27-year-old has struggled to find his feet at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu thus far.
Following Denzel Dumfries’ arrival, Alexander-Arnold has even found himself on the periphery this season. As a result, speculation surrounding his future has started emerging.
Now, TEAMtalk claim that intermediaries have started exploring options to find a new suitable destination for him, with Arsenal and Liverpool contacted over a potential transfer.
The Gunners and the Merseyside club are considering signing a new right-back and have expressed their interest in the Real Madrid defender.
Moreover, Manchester City and Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign him. However, the report state that Alexander-Arnold has no intention of leaving the Spanish capital in January, while Real Madrid don’t want to weaken their squad in mid-season.
Battle
Alexander-Arnold, valued at around £51m by Transfermarkt, is comfortable in the right-back and RWB positions. Moreover, he can provide cover in the engine room if needed.
Since Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Liverpool have struggled with the right-back position in recent times as Jeremie Frimpong has failed to find his feet in the Premier League. On the other hand, Conor Bradley has been struggling with fitness problems.
Arsenal, meanwhile, currently have Ben White and Jurrien Timber as right-backs. But White has had numerous fitness problems in recent years, while Timber has just returned to full fitness after recovering from a groin problem.
As a result, Arsenal and Liverpool want a new right-sided defender. Although Alexander-Arnold has struggled in La Liga, he is a highly talented player and is currently at the prime stage of his career.
Therefore, the 27-year-old would be a shrewd acquisition for Arsenal or Liverpool should either club purchase him. However, it remains to be seen whether the North London club or the Anfield club will eventually make a move to sign him.
