Chelsea now eyeing move for Como midfielder Lucas Da Cunha

Chelsea have expressed interest in signing French international midfielder Lucas Da Cunha from Como, according to TEAMtalk.

Da Cunha, valued at £25m by Transfermarkt, has been a key part of Como’s resurgence in recent years. He joined the Lombardy-based outfit from Nice in 2023 and helped them gain promotion to the Italian top flight the following season.

Despite the heavy overhaul and rebuild, he has remained a vital cog in Cesc Fabregas’ side, amassing 77 appearances for the club since their promotion to Serie A.

Last season, the midfielder featured in all but two of 38 Serie A games, playing across different midfield positions to help the club achieve an historic UEFA Champions League qualification.

In the ongoing campaign, Da Cunha has been ever-present in all of Como’s fixtures this season, including the memorable 4-1 UEFA Champions League win over RB Leipzig, where he captained the team.

Having shown such high-level reliability, versatility and leadership qualities, it’s no surprise several top clubs are vying for his signature.

One of the clubs looking to sign Da Cunha is Chelsea, according to TEAMtalk, which claims that the London giants have placed the 25-year-old on their radar.

Although the midfielder’s name is only beginning to make the rounds, the report reveals that Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, had been keeping tabs on his progress and even made contact to sign him before he ultimately decided to extend his contract with Como.

‘Exceptional’ midfielder

Still, despite his fresh new contract, the Blues are closely monitoring the French international as they look to bolster their midfield ranks in 2027, according to the report.

However, Chelsea are set to face stern competition from Liverpool, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, who are all keeping tabs on the 25-year-old, TEAMtalk adds.

Xabi Alonso’s side have had a mixed start to the season. After five games played, they have won two games, lost two and drawn one.

Since winning their opening two games, they have failed to win any of their next three games, including a disappointing 2-0 loss to Brentford before the international break.

One notable area of concern has been their midfield. The manager has utilised every available option, including Reece James, Malo Gusto, Romeo Lavia, Jordan Henderson and Valentin Barco in that position, yet they always look exposed and vulnerable during transitions.

With 7.12 recoveries per game this season and a sky-high 94% successful passes, Da Cunha, described as ‘exceptional’ by his former teammate at Lausanne-Sport, Stjepan Kukuruzovic, would be a viable anchor to not only shield the Blues’ defence but also provide leadership qualities both on the pitch and in the dressing room, should a deal be agreed.
