Manchester United identify Eddie Howe as potential Michael Carrick replacement

Eddie Howe: Newcastle boss admitted to hospital and misses Manchester United match | Football News | Sky Sports

Manchester United have won only one out of their opening five matches in the Premier League this season, and having also been knocked out of the League Cup, there is significant pressure on them to turn a corner sooner rather than later.

After some rebuilding works over the summer, the Red Devils have a fairly competent team and if he cannot stitch together a run of strong results soon, it is reasonable to believe Michael Carrick’s continuity as the head coach will become precarious.

Football Insider has reported that the board has already commenced its search for a successor with Eddie Howe identified as a suitable candidate. He is available to join immediately having left Newcastle United earlier this year after a five-year spell.

Carrick’s job at Old Trafford remains safe for the time being as United don’t plan on parting ways with him just yet, as per the source, but the groundwork is being done to locate possible replacements if the team’s form does not improve in the near future.

Howe a strong candidate for Man United job

Eddie Howe oversaw one of Newcastle United’s most successful period in the 21st century, and with extensive Premier League experience as well as some Champions League games under his belt, he is an ideal candidate for Manchester United.

United can expect Howe to employ a modern style of football, which would be centric to pressing aggressively higher up the pitch to regain possession. His direct transitions and offensive overloads could work well with the existing set of players at the club too.

Besides having a strong tactical identity, Howe is also flexible with the formation he employs. By using a 4-3-3, a 4-5-1 or a more defensive 5-4-1, he knows how to best utilise his resources without compromising on his broader style of play.

Rather than employing an interim manager as a stop-gap solution, Howe’s appointment would be immediate and free of a contract buyout, so it comes as no surprise that Manchester United are eyeing his services if Carrick is relieved of his duties.
