Chelsea are reportedly interested in signing Liverpool target Jarell Quansah, as per Football Insider.
Following Maxence Lacroix’s arrival from Crystal Palace this summer, Xabi Alonso currently has the Frenchman plus Wesley Fofana, Josh Acheampong, Levi Colwill and Jorrel Hato as centre-back options.
Moreover, Aaron Anselmino can provide cover in this position but has found himself on the periphery. With Alonso deploying a back three system, the Blues are seemingly planning to add depth to this position.
Now, Football Insider state that Chelsea have expressed their interest in Quansah after being impressed by his recent developments at Leverkusen.
However, the West London club will have to overcome stiff competition to seal the deal as Real Madrid and Liverpool are also in this race. The Reds have kept a close eye on his development, with Andoni Iraola’s side having a £59.5m buyback clause, which will expire in June 2027.
Quansah is open to leaving Leverkusen to take the next step in his career but is reluctant to return to Anfield, as he previously struggled to find regular game time. So, this is a big boost for Chelsea in this race.
The report state that Arsenal were interested in the Leverkusen star this summer, but having purchased Ezri Konsa from Aston Villa, they may opt not to make a move for Quansah.
Quansah to Chelsea
Quansah is a 6ft 3in tall right-footed centre-back but is also comfortable in the right-back position. The 23-year-old is quick, strong, good in the air, comfortable playing out from the back, and is efficient in defensive contributions.
Liverpool currently have Ronald Araujo, Jeremy Jacquet, Giovanni Leoni, Joe Gomez and Virgil Van Dijk as centre-back options. However, Leoni and Gomez have struggled with fitness problems in recent times, while Araujo has joined on loan from Barcelona.
On the other hand, Van Dijk has reached the twilight of his career and his existing deal is set to run until next summer. So, Liverpool are seemingly planning to buy a new defender.
Quansah is a talented player and has secured his place in the England national team after proving his worth in club football. So, he would be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea should they eventually manage to secure his services by defeating Liverpool in the race.
