Liverpool set sights on Jules Kounde amid Jeremie Frimpong struggles

Liverpool are keeping tabs on Barcelona centre-back Jules Jounde ahead of a possible transfer to Anfield in 2027, according to Football Insider.

With Conor Bradley still sidelined with a lengthy injury he suffered last season, Jeremie Frimpong is currently Liverpool’s only natural right-back option.

However, the 25-year-old has struggled to replicate the blistering form he showed at Bayer Leverkusen.

Since his arrival, Frimpong has only provided four goal contributions in 41 games across all competitions. While his low goal output may be excused given his defensive role, he has been found wanting defensively on several occasions.

Among his notable mistakes is the 2-2 draw against Nottingham Forest in matchweek two, where his position was largely exploited, prompting the manager to bring on Dominik Szoboszlai later in the match.

Andoni Iraola has now deployed Ronald Araujo as his preferred right-back in the last three Premier League matches, while Frimpong has remained unconvincing whenever called upon, leading the club to explore potential options.

This is according to Football Insider, which claims that Liverpool are plotting a swoop to sign a new right-back due to Frimpong’s struggles.

Although the club initially opted against signing another right-back in the summer, reinforcing the position has now become an increasing priority, and the club are now working behind the scenes to sign someone, the report adds.

Kounde to Liverpool

Providing more clarity on the situation, football transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke, speaking on the Transfer Insider podcast, said, ‘Right-back is probably another position that Liverpool do need to strengthen in with the issues they’ve had.

‘It’s not been the most stable position for Liverpool, with Jeremie Frimpong struggling to reach the heights expected of him when they brought him to Anfield last summer.

O’Rourke added that the Reds could consider a January move or wait until next summer to make a formal move.

As a result, Liverpool have been assessing potential options, with Football Insider adding that the club are keeping tabs on Barcelona’s Kounde ahead of a possible transfer.

The Frenchman has dropped behind the pecking order in Hansi Flick’s starting lineup, fuelling rumours that he could consider a departure, which has put several top clubs on alert, according to the report.

While Barcelona are poised to keep Kounde, described as ‘incredible’ by Hansi Flick, the report adds that formal offers in excess of £60m could soften their stance amid interest from Liverpool.

Liverpool will hope to return to winning ways when they travel to South London to face Brentford at the GTECH Community Stadium on Saturday, 17th October.
