Liverpool plotting January bid for Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold
Defensive depth remains a weak aspect of the Liverpool squad and sooner rather than later, the Reds will need to invest in bringing in new central defenders, as well as full backs, especially one on the right side.
Fichajes has reported that the Reds are considering a surprise transfer for Real Madrid star Trent Alexander-Arnold as soon as in the January transfer window, and are ready to offer £17 million for his acquisition during the winter.
Having left Liverpool in 2025 as a free agent, Alexander-Arnold’s Real Madrid career has seen him play second fiddle for much of his year and a half at the club so far and in the prime years of his career, he may entertain thoughts of returning to Anfield.
Jose Mourinho has opted in favour of using Denzel Dumfries and Federico Valverde at right back over Alexander-Arnold lately, so it will be interesting to see how the Madrid hierarchy react to a possible offer from Liverpool for their former player.
Alexander-Arnold return to Liverpool an unlikely proposition
Liverpool would significantly bolstered by Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to the club. Even in the limited minutes he has played for Real Madrid this season, he has put in excellent displays, particularly when playing in possession.
Given that Jeremie Frimpong’s defensive shortcomings are worse compared to Alexander-Arnold and Ronald Araujo is naturally a central defender, Alexander-Arnold would fit right back into the Liverpool team if he was to return to the club.
With that said, it still seems like a tall order for that to happen as Madrid see him as a medium-term investment and given Denzel Dumfries’ age and subpar performances over the last few weeks, an opportunity may be around the corner for the Englishman.
It will be interesting to see what other options Liverpool have on their radar but undeniably, a right back’s signing should be their priority at the start of next year.
