Chelsea keen on signing Liverpool target Trent Alexander-Arnold

Chelsea are reportedly keen on signing Liverpool target Trent Alexander-Arnold, as per Football Insider.
After enjoying great success at Anfield, the 28-year-old decided to join Los Blancos last year. However, he has struggled to flourish in his career in the Spanish capital.
The Englishman played only 30 matches across all competitions last term, registering five assists and keeping just two clean sheets. This season, he has found himself on the periphery under new manager Jose Mourinho, starting only five matches in all tournaments. Still, he has notched up a solitary assist and kept two clean sheets.
Now, Football Insider state that although Alexander-Arnold left Liverpool on a bitter note, the Reds have continued to keep a close eye on his performances.
On the other hand, Chelsea are keen on purchasing him, but Los Blancos have no intention of parting ways with him, while the defender wants to stay at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu to prove his doubters wrong.
Alexander-Arnold is valued at around £50m by Transfermarkt and still has a contract until 2031. Therefore, Real Madrid are in a strong position to demand a huge fee if they are forced to part ways with him.
Alexander-Arnold is a right-back by trait but is also comfortable in the RWB position. Furthermore, he can provide cover in the deeper midfield role if needed.
Battle
After Alexander-Arnold’s departure, Liverpool struggled with the right-back issues. However, Ronald Araujo has displayed promising performances in this position this season.
On the other hand, Chelsea have been playing a back three system under Xabi Alonso this season, and they currently have Reece James and Malo Gusto as specialist RWB options.
However, James has continued to struggle with fitness problems, while Gusto has found it difficult to break into the starting line-up this season. So, it appears the Blues are considering signing a new wingback despite signing Marco Palestra last summer.
Alexander-Arnold is a Premier League-proven defender and is currently at the prime stage of his career. Therefore, he might be a shrewd acquisition for Chelsea or Liverpool should either club purchase him.
However, it is going to be interesting to see whether the West London club or the Merseyside club eventually make a concrete approach to secure his services.
