Liverpool Defenders Assessed: Who Should Play Leftback Next Season?
And we’re cracking on with our summer feature, today Two Liverpool Fans’ talks about what the options are for the left-back role for next season.
For this feature’s purposes, the formation Liverpool are deploying is a 4-4-2. (note: Johnson was picked as the player who should play rightback for us next season)
Option A: Fabio Aurelio
When he’s at full fitness, Aurelio is both secure defensively as well as great offensively. Good at going forward and an excellent distributor of the ball. Furthermore, he tracks back well and he gets the job done at the back. Perhaps his biggest asset: the dead ball. A wonderful free kick specialist, along with a corner kick taker.
The Brazilian is a wonderful full-back, and could be one of the best in the world, had his injuries not caused him such a stop-start career at Anfield.
Option B: Jack Robinson
The youngest player to make an appearance in Liverpool colours in the Premier League and he impressed with several sound displays at the back, with perhaps his biggest praises coming from his display against Arsenal on the back end of last season. Not seen too much of him, but judging from what I’ve seen, the main focus of his game is in defence, and he’s pretty good at tracking back, doing pretty well to keep a pacey player like Walcott at bay for such a long period of time at the Emirates.
Can stand up to the pressure, and he’s certainly one for the future at Liverpool.
Option C: Danny Wilson
The most untried option so far, with him getting only two league appearances all season. Came in with a lot of promise and I think that he is more than capable of delivering that promise that saw Liverpool bring him to Anfield for a fee of just more than a million pounds. I however believe that next season is NOT the season where he will breakthrough.
Option D: A Transfer In
A lot of rumours coming in for Liverpool’s left back position. Among mentioned are Newcastle’s Jose Enrique, Arsenal’s Gael Clichy and Everton’s Leighton Baines. Due to the rivalry bad blood, I will directly cross out Baines as an option. Both Clichy and Enrique are more attacking minded full-backs and they would/should be able to win the leftback spot should either sign for Liverpool in the summer.
My Choice
Gael Clichy is my choice, and there are many good reasons for this. One being that he will come cheap, being that Arsenal are willing to toss away the Frenchman for around 8 million pounds and the second reason being that he’s world-class. He is great at going forward and his marking/defending is pretty good as well.
