Sir Alex Ferguson has welcomed the international break as he hopes a number of his Manchester United stars will be fit to return to the starting fold over the next two weeks.
The likes of Nemanja Vidic, Chris Smalling and Tom Cleverley will be present at the club’s Carrington training base as a number of team-mates are called up to their respective squads around the world.
The trio are all hoping to use the the break as a bid to regain full-fitness, with United facing fierce rivals Liverpool following the latest round of international fixtures. Ferguson admits he is keen for all three to be in contention for the game at Anfield but is hesitant to select any player that is lacking match fitness in such a crucial fixture.
“The most important thing is the work they do before the internationals finish,” Ferguson told MUTV.
“We really want to have Vidic and Cleverley doing some really strong work, and Smalling too, that would bring them on to a level that they could play at Anfield.
“You can’t go there with players who are semi-fit or just coming back from injury.
“You need players who are fully focused and up to speed in terms of fitness and sharpness.”
