United To Miss Out On Winger?
By Football Talk.
Manchester United face stiff competition from Real Madrid for the signature of Benfica winger Angel Di Maria, according to Spanish daily AS. United have been heavily linked with a move for the Argentinean in recent weeks as Sir Alex Ferguson looks for a long-term replacement for Ryan Giggs.
However, Jose Mourinho is expected to become the new Real Madrid manager after the Champions League Final on Saturday and is wanting Di Maria to be his first signing at the Bernabeau. Real’s attempts will be strengthened by the fact that Di Maria’s agent, Jorge Mendes, already has a close relationship with the club after negotiating Ronaldo’s transfer from Manchester United last summer.
Di Maria has enjoyed a terrific season in Portugal with Benfica, scoring 9 goals and 16 assists in 40 games and he is expected to be a potential star performer at this summers World Cup with Argentina. Ferguson was thought to want to get a £35m deal completed before his stock rises in the summer but now his attempts could be scuppered by his old foe Jose Mourinho.
