REPORTS: Spurs Win Jan Vertonghen Race After Agreeing €12m Fee

Tottenham are closing in on the signing of Arsenal and Chelsea target Jan Vertonghen, according to reports.
The defender has been strongly linked with a move away from Ajax over the past 18 months, with the Belgian being a long-term target for Arsenal and Chelsea, who both made enquiries for the player in the summer. A move to either club has failed to materialise and now it seems Tottenham are set to snatch the 24-year-old from under their rivals noses.
Dutch-based media outlet Het Algemeen Dagblad are reporting that Spurs have agreed a €12 million fee with Ajax for Vertonghen and will finalise the deal in the January transfer window.
Harry Redknapp has been on the look out for a new centre back after narrowly missing out on Gary Cahill in the summer. The Spurs boss is concerned by the injury problem he faces at the back with Michael Dawson out with a long term injury and William Gallas also struggling with injuries this term. It seems likely Sebastian Bassong will depart in January making way for Vertoghen who can play at left back as well as in the middle of defence.
