Chelsea Set To Trigger Fellaini Release Clause – Will United Also Make A Move?
Chelsea are set to make their move to sign Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini by triggering his release clause but they could face competition from Man Utd.
With the January transfer window now open for business we’ll be keeping you up-to-date with all the latest transfer gossip. Today, more on the future of Marouane Fellaini.
Chelsea are set to make their move to sign Everton midfielder Marouane Fellaini by triggering the release clause in his contract this month, according to Goal.com.
The report claims the European champions see the Belgian as a long-term replacement for Frank Lampard – who’s expected to leave the club in the summer – with owner Roman Abramovich prepared to match the buy-out clause in Fellaini’s contract, which is believed to be in excess of £25m.
The Daily Star are reporting that Toffees boss David Moyes is already planning for life without Fellaini by targeting an £8m move for Wigan midfielder James McCarthy, with the report suggesting Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to rival Chelsea for the 25-year-old’s signature.
However, French media outlet L’Equipe support Goal.com’s belief that it’s Chelsea who are in the driving seat, claiming that the West Londoners are set to land the giant Belgian before the weekend.
Despite being regarded predominantly as a defensive midfielder, the 6 foot 4 inch Belgian has proved to be equally adept at playing further up the field this season and has scored 9 goals in 18 games so far this campaign.
But despite his exploits in front of goal this season, Goal.com suggest Chelsea will look to deploy him in the centre of the park if he does end up making the move to Stanford Bridge.
While all signs are seem to be pointing to a potential move to Chelsea, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sir Alex Ferguson was to make a move as well. Fellaini has been a thorn in United’s side on more than one occasion in recent encounters and the United boss has a habit of signing players that do well against his side.

Man Utd could certainly do with a player like Fellaini and with Paul Scholes not getting any youngster, many United fans are calling for the club to strengthen the central midfield area, and there aren’t many better out there than Fellaini at present.
However, this is all just paper-talk at present so until we see something official on a clubs website, Fellaini remains an Everton player.
