Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger sent a scout to watch Celtic’s Victor Wanyama on Tuesday night having made a defensive midfielder a priority in the summer, according to the Telegraph.
The report claims Wenger failed with a deadline day move for Toulouse midfielder Etienne Capoue and while the Frenchman is understood to remain a target, the boss is said to be actively watching other targets and asked his scouting team for a report on Wanyama.
The 21-year-old Kenyan has been a huge hit in Scotland since making the move in 2011 from Belgian side Beerschot, and has put in a string of impressive display’s at the heart of Celtic”s midfield.
The Scottish giants entertained Serie A champions Juventus at Parkhead last night in the first leg of their Champions League last 16 clash but despite dominating play for long periods, the SPL side were harshly beaten 3-0 by their Italian counterparts.
It may not have been Wanyama’s finest display last night but at least it gave Wenger the chance to see him in action against top opposition. I’ve been calling out for the boss to bring in a powerful ball-winner in midfield and was surprised someone wasn’t signed in January.

We haven’t replaced Alex Song since selling him to Barcelona and while Mikel Arteta has done a fine job shielding the back-four this season, it’s not his best position so we desperately need to bring in a defensive-minded midfielder for next season and Capoue or Wanyama would fit the bill nicely.
