Highly-rated defender Luke Shaw is set to snub interest from Chelsea and Tottenham and commit his long-term future to Southampton, according to the Sun.
The left-back has emerged as one of England’s hottest young talents after a superb debut season in the Premier League with the Saints – earning himself a reputation as the ‘new Gareth Bale’.
Not only did Shaw come through the same Southampton youth set-up as Bale, but he also display’s many of the same characteristics that the Welshman had when he first come on to the scene, with his attack-minded approach from left-back causing opposition teams all sorts of problems last year.
The Sun claim the 17-year-old has attracted interest from Chelsea and Tottenham with both London giants keen on luring him from St Mary’s this summer. However, the England Under-21 star looks set to disappoint the duo with the newspaper suggesting he’s set to sign a new five-year deal worth £25,000-a-week when he turns 18 next week.
Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino reiterated his desire to hold on to Shaw and claims his top players want to remain with the club this summer.
“We have total confidence in keeping all our valuable players.
“They believe in this project and want to stay here.” Pochettino is quoted as saying by the Sun
It will be a huge decision by Shaw to snub the likes of Chelsea and Tottenham but perhaps he thinks his chances of first team football are greater with the Saints, and if so, you’d have to admire his mature attitude for one so young. Not many youngsters these days would turn down a big money move to one of the league tops clubs.
