Chelsea Confirm Signing Of Experienced Goalkeeper On One-Year Deal
Chelsea have announced the signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer with the veteran signing a one-year contract after his release from Fulham.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea have signed Mark Schwarzer.
Chelsea have announced the surprise signing of goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer on a free transfer with the veteran signing a one-year contract.
The Australian stopper left west London rivals Fulham this summer after five seasons at Craven Cottage and the Blues have wasted no time in snapping him up on a free transfer. Upon completing the move, Schwarzer told Chelseafc.com:
‘It’s a phenomenal club. ‘It’s one of the biggest and best clubs in the world, and it’s an honour to sign for Chelsea. I didn’t take much convincing to come here.’
The 40-year-old will now act as cover for first choice goalkeeper Petr Cech and his vast experience will no doubt be of huge benefit around the club. Having spent over 15 years in England, Schwarzer has played for Bradford City, Middlesborough and Fulham, making over 500 Premier League appearances in the process. He has also represented his country over 100 times and played at two World Cups, so he brings with him a wealth of experience.
It’s certainly a shrewd move from Chelsea as they were in dire need of some back-up for Cech having released Hilario and Ross Turnbull, while highly-rated youngster Thibaut Courtois has joined Atletico Madrid for another season on loan.
Bringing in Schwarzer as a short term option on a free transfer allows the Blues to get through this season before reassessing their goalkeeping situation next summer when Courtios will return to Stamford Bridge.
It’s also an excellent move for Schwarzer, as although he may not get a lot of first team action, he’s joined a club playing in the Champions League, who will be fighting for trophies, and he won’t have to uproot his family as it’s just down the road from his old club Fulham.
