Transfer News: Chelsea Eye Rooney Alternative | Liverpool Close In On Defender
Latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea eye another striker if their move for Wayne Rooney hits a dead end and Liverpool are expected to sign a new defender.
With the summer transfer window now open, there is plenty of gossip doing the rounds in the newspapers so we’ll keep you up-to-date with the latest transfer rumours. Today, Chelsea are interested in signing Samuel Eto’o if their move for Wayne Rooney hits a dead end and Liverpool are expected to sign a new defender this week.
Chelsea eye Eto’o
First up and the Daily Star are reporting that Chelsea have identified Samuel Eto’o as a potential addition if they fail to land Wayne Rooney this summer.
Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desire to take Rooney to Stamford Bridge this summer but the Blues have so far been frustrated in their attempts with Manchester United insisting the 27-year-old would not be sold this summer.
The Star claim Roman Abramovich is not willing to splash out a huge fee on the unsettled striker with the club set to only slightly improve upon on their opening £25m offer – which is almost certainly not going to be enough to persuade the champions into selling.
This had led to Mourinho looking at alternatives and the newspaper suggest he’s turned to Cameroonian international Eto’o, who is expected to leave Anzhi Makhachkala this summer after the clubs owner put all the players up for sale in order to slash the wage bill.
Mourinho worked with the 32-year-old at Inter Milan and he may look to bring him to west London this summer to compete with Fernando Torres, Romelu Lukaku and Demba Ba for a starting spot up front.
Liverpool close in on defender
Next up and the Liverpool Echo are reporting that Liverpool are confident of completing the signing of Granada left-back Guilherme Siqueira this week for a fee in the region of £5m.
Brendan Rodgers has so far been frustrated in his attempts to bring in cover at left-back with Jose Enrique currently the only senior player in that position at the club. After failing to tie up deals for Aly Cissokho of Valencia and Lorenzo Melgarejo of Benfica, the Echo claim that Liverpool are now set to secure the £5m purchase of Siqueira – ideally before the Premier League season kicks off on Saturday.
Siqueira has been a consistent performer for Granada over the past three years and may hope that a move to Anfield will help him make a late push for a place in the Brazil squad ahead of next summers World Cup.
