Arsenal Set To Open Talks With Wenger Over New £8m-A-Year Deal

Arsenal are set to open talks with manager Arsene Wenger over a new £8million-a-year contract following the Gunners blistering start to the new season, according to the Mirror.

The Frenchman just celebrated his 17th anniversary since taking charge at Arsenal and it looks as though he could be ready to extend his stay in north London.

The 63-year-old is in the final year of his contract and the Mirror claim the club’s hierarchy will finally open serious talks over a new deal during next weeks international break with a three-year-deal worth £8m-a-year set to be offered – meaning a bumper £24m pay-day will be on the table.

Majority shareholder Stan Kronke and chief executive Ivan Gazidis remain fully behind their manager and the report suggests they are confident he will commit his future to the club – although they are mindful that Wenger recently publicly stated he’s willing to wait until the end of the season before deciding on his future.

This admission apparently alerted big-spending PSG who are understood to be keen on Wenger taking over in the summer. However, the newspaper claims that Arsenal’s excellent start to the season has re-energised the Frenchman and he now believes he’s on the verge of another era of success at the Emirates after making the best start to a season in seven years.

A 10-match winning streak has seen Arsenal climb to the top of the Premier League table and take control of their Champions League group with an impressive 2-0 win over Napoli on Tuesday, leaving many feeling this could finally be the year we end our eight year trophy drought.

The pressure was certainly on Wenger after the disastrous 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa but he responded by breaking our transfer record to sign Mesut Ozil and taking the team on a sensational winning run. Even if we end up trophy-less again this season, as long as we sustain a serious title challenge and look as though we’ve progressed, I think Wenger will have earned a new three-year deal.
