Moyes Planning £45m Double Swoop As Part Of Summer Overhaul
Manchester United boss David Moyes is planning to spend £45m on full-backs Luke Shaw and Seamus Coleman as part of a huge summer overhaul at Old Trafford.
The January transfer window may have slammed shut but clubs will still be working hard behind the scenes at identifying targets for the summer, so we’ll bring you all the latest news, gossip and rumours. Today, Man Utd eye a big-money double swoop.
Manchester United boss David Moyes is planning to spend £45m on full-backs Luke Shaw and Seamus Coleman as part of a huge summer overhaul at Old Trafford, according to the Mirror.
Reports over the weekend suggested that United chiefs will hand Moyes a staggering £100m transfer budget to revamp his flagging squad with this summer after a disappointing first season in charge since replacing Sir Alex Ferguson last summer.
It seems Moyes has already drawn up a list of targets with the Mirror claiming he wants to raid former club Everton for £20m-rated right-back Coleman. The Irishman has been in impressive form this campaign at Goodison Park and Roberto Martinez will be desperate to hang on to him, but the cash-strapped Merseysiders may find it difficult to resist a sizeable offer from the champions.
The newspaper states that Moyes is also planning to make a formal £25m move for Southampton’s highly-rated left-back Luke Shaw. The England under-21 international has caught the eye after breaking in to the Saints first team 18 months ago and has been linked with a whole host of top clubs in recent months.
With Patrice Evra out of contract at the end of the season and set to follow Nemanja Vidic out the exit door at Old Trafford, it’s understandable Moyes is already planning for the future and identifying potential replacements.
Shaw would certainly fit the bill and could fill the left-back spot for the next 10 years, however, the 18-year-old signed a new long-term contract at St Mary’s last year so it’s going to take big-money to persuade the south coast club to cash in.
There is little doubt that Moyes is going to have to spend heavily in the summer to create a squad that will make United competitive again next season, and it looks like he’s prepared to spend a large chunk of his budget on improving his full-back options. Whether he’ll be able to pull-off this ambitious double swoop remains to be seen, but they would be two excellent additions if United could do it.
