Liverpool To Rival Man Utd For Croatian Defender
Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head with Manchester United for the signing of a £15m-rated Croatian international defender. Find out who he is here.
As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Liverpool are linked with Dejan Lovren.
Liverpool are set to battle it out with Manchester United for the signing of Southampton defender Dejan Lovren, according to the Mirror.
The Croatian international has been in excellent form for the Saints having made an £8.5m switch from Lyon last June, and has played a key role in Mauricio Pochettino’s impressive side this season.
Liverpool were among the clubs linked last summer before the 24-year-old opted for a move to St Mary’s and it seems Brendan Rodgers is ready to renew his interest with the Mirror claiming that the Reds boss is lining-up a bid for the defender at the end of the season.
The Merseysiders moved top of the Premier League table with a 4-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday and while their attack is one of the most potent in Europe, their defence has leaked 39 goals already this season so Rodgers is expected to strengthen at the back this summer with Lovern seemingly a key target.
However, Liverpool are likely to face stiff competition for his services with reports last week claiming that Manchester United are also keen and are ready to test Southampton’s resolve with a £15m offer.
United have endured a difficult season and with Nemanja Vidic leaving the club when his contract expires in June, David Moyes has a huge void to fill at the back and the papers are suggesting Lovern is high on the Scot’s wish-list.
Southampton will no doubt be desperate to keep hold of their defensive rock but the club, and the player, may find it difficult to resist if the likes of United and Liverpool come calling with big-money offers this summer.
Lovern has certainly been hugely impressive for the South Coast club this year and the fact he’s now proven he can cut it in the Premier League is likely to appeal to the likes of Rodgers and Moyes. Whether they’ll be able to strike a deal with Southampton remains to be seen, but the Saints may be persuaded to turn a quick profit if a bid in the region of £15m does arrive.
