Man Utd ‘Convinced’ They’ve Beaten Chelsea To £30m Ace After £100k Contract Offer
Man Utd are convinced they have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Luke Shaw with a £30m deal believed to be ‘virtually’ complete for the impressive youngster
As we approach the business end of the season clubs are starting to make plans for the summer transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Man Utd are confident they have won the race for Luke Shaw.
Manchester United are convinced they have beaten Chelsea to the signing of Southampton left-back Luke Shaw with a £30m deal believed to be ‘virtually’ complete, according to the Guardian.
Shaw came through the Saints highly acclaimed youth set-up and has established himself as one of the most exciting full-backs in the Premier League this season. His impressive displays have attracted interest from Man Utd and Chelsea and the English giants have been jostling for the 18-year-old’s signature in recent months.
However, it appears United may have won the race with the Guardian claiming that the deposed champions are ‘convinced’ they have sealed a £30m deal after offering Shaw a five-year contract worth £100,000-a-week with the promise of regular first team football.
Patrice Evra is set to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires in June and it will leave the door open for Shaw to come in and immediately claim the left-back berth in what’s going to be a new-look United defence next season.
Although Shaw grew up a Chelsea fan, he’s believed to have concerns about moving to Stamford Bridge as he’ll have to compete with Cesar Azpilicueta and possibly Ashley Cole for a starting spot in Jose Mourinho’s starting eleven.
In addition, the newspaper report suggests that once the Blues found out how much United had offered, they refused to match it and decided to pull out of the race leaving the Red Devils clear to tie up the deal.
Former boss David Moyes was heavily involved in pushing forward with a move for Shaw and United chiefs are understood to still be keen on completing the proposed deal despite the Scot’s departure.
If United do end up luring Shaw to Old Trafford, it would represent a major coup and a real signal of intent that they are determined to build a squad capable of pushing for a place back in the top four next season after a disastrous campaign under Moyes.
As well as a new left-back, United are likely to need another centre-back as Nemanja Vidic is on his way to Inter Milan, but much of their transfer business will depend on who their next manager will be.
