Manchester United ‘Boss’ Lining-Up Double Swoop
Manchester United manager-in-waiting Louis van Gaal wants to bring defenders Bruno Martins Indi and Mats Hummels with him to Old Trafford this summer.
As we approach the opening of the summer window clubs will be intensifying their efforts in the transfer market so we’ll bring you all the latest news and gossip. Today, Manchester United are linked with a double swoop.
Manchester United manager-in-waiting Louis van Gaal wants to bring defenders Bruno Martins Indi and Mats Hummels with him to Old Trafford this summer, according to reports.
Van Gaal is widely expected to be named as David Moyes permanent successor in the coming days and while we await the official announcement, it seems the experienced Dutchman is already making recruitment plans for this summer.
The Mirror claim that van Gaal has set his sights on making a double swoop for two highly rated defenders as he looks to fill the void left by Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.
Vidic is set for a free transfer move to Inter Milan this summer while Ferdinand confirmed earlier this week that he’s bringing to an end his illustrious 12-year career at United when his contract expires next month.
It means United have some big shoes to fill and the newspaper suggests that first name on van Gaal’s hit-list is Borussia Dortmund centre-back Hummels. The German international has emerged as one of the finest defenders in Europe over the past few years and played a key role in helping Dortmund to back-to-back Bundesliga titles in 2001 and 2012 as well as reaching the final of the Champions League in 2013.
Understandably, the German outfit are keen to hang on to their star man so it’s going to need a sizeable offer to tempt them into a sale, but van Gaal seems intent on luring the 25-year-old to Old Trafford this summer as he looks to rebuild the deposed champions flagging squad.
The Mirror claim that also on van Gaal’s radar is Dutch international defender Martins Indi. The 22-year-old has been on the books at Feyenoord since he was a teenager and has come through the youth ranks to become a vital part of the first team set up.
van Gaal clearly rates him highly as he’s also a regular in the Holland national team and played a key role in the side that secured qualification to this summers World Cup finals in Brazil.
It’s not clear how much it would take to force Feyenoord into a sale, but the versatile defender – who can play at both centre-back and left-back – would be a useful addition to the United squad if they manage to get a deal agreed.
United have endured a disastrous season that saw them end-up finishing seventh in the Premier League table and without European football to look forward to next season. With experienced players like Vidic and Ferdinand leaving, there’s little doubt the new boss is going to have a huge rebuilding job on his hands if he wants to bring the glory days back to Old Trafford.

However, if they could pull them off, signings such as Hummels and Martins Indi would be an excellent start and show that United mean business ahead of what’s going to be a pivotal summer for the Manchester giants.
