Sneijder, Man United target?

Manchester United and Chelsea are set to renew their interest in Wesley Sneijder after Galatasaray confirmed the playmaker can leave if someone meets their €15m valuation this summer, according to reports today.

The duo have been linked with Sneijder several times in the past but have always missed out on his signature, with the last time being when the Dutchman joined Galatasaray from Inter Milan in January 2013.

The 29-year-old struggled with injury problems in the 2012/13 season which restricted him to just 24 appearances in all competitions, but he regained his fitness last year and scored 17 goals in 42 games for Gala as well as providing 9 assists for his team mates.

It seems his rejuvenated form has once again led to interested from the Premier League with the Daily Star claiming that new Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal has turned his attention to Sneijder after reportedly pulling out of a deal to sign Bayern Munich’s Toni Kroos.

However, the Red Devils will have to face a familiar foe with the newspaper suggesting that Chelsea are also interested in luring the former Real Madrid man to England as Jose Mourinho looks to add to his attacking options this summer.

Galatasaray president Unal Aysal made it clear late last month when speculation first linked Chelsea with a move this summer that it would take an offer at at least €15m to persuade them to sell the experienced attacking midfielder.

“If Chelsea were to offer a deal worth over €15 million (£12.5m) I would give Sneijder permission to leave if that’s what he wanted.” Aysal is quoted as saying by the Star

Although he’s now approaching 30, Sneijder is still a hugely talented player and it would be great to see him trying his luck here in the Premiership after he’s come close to moving to England several times in the past.

It appears we might finally see him on these shores as the Daily Star also state that Sneijder has ruled out a potential return to Italy and has made it clear he would be open to a move to a top Premier League side – although they don’t carry any quotes to confirm this claim.

United are expected to be busy in the transfer market this summer as van Gaal tries to rebuild the squad following a disastrous season under David Moyes. Creativity in the middle of the park is something that United certainly lacked last season so Sneijder could be a useful addition if they were able to lure him to Old Trafford.

However, the Dutch international knows Mourinho well from their time together at Inter Milan so he could be tempted to link up with his former boss again in West London if Chelsea agree to meet Galatasaray’s €15m asking price. That kind of money would be a decent fee for a player of Sneijders experience and quality, although the clubs may be aware that he’ll have little sell-on value given he’s approaching his 30th birthday.
