The draw for the knockout stages of the Champions League was conducted this morning and as usual it’s thrown up some intriguing ties.
Arsenal made it through to the knockout stages of the competition for the 15th consecutive season having comfortably qualified from Group D on 13 points, with the Gunners narrowly missing out on top spot to Borussia Dortmund.
However, the North Londoners avoided all the big-boys and were drawn to play Ligue 1 side Monaco in the last 16 with Arsene Wenger’s men playing the first leg at home before going back to his former side for the return leg.
Chelsea cruised through the group phase after topping Group G on 14 points but have been rewarded with a tricky test as they’ll take on big-spending French champions Paris Saint-Germain in the knockout stages, with the first leg away from home.
Manchester City did it the hard way as they had to come from behind to beat Bayern Munich at home before a stunning 2-0 win away to Roma last week secured their safe passage from group E and book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League for the very first time. Manuel Pellegrini’s men will now face 2011 champions Barcelona with the first leg at Etihad Stadium.
Other ties will see Atletico Madrid take on Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus face Borrusia Dortmund, Schalke take on defending champions Real Madrid, Shakhtar Donetsk face Bayern Munich while Basel take on Porto.
The first legs will be played on either the 17/18 or 24/25 February before the return legs on either 10/11 or 17/18th March.
