TRANSFER RUMOURS: Chelsea Snap Up £24m Juan Mata

By on August 21, 2011

Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Spanish winger Juan Mata after agreeing terms on a £24m deal.

Several reports are claiming Mate has agreed a £3m a year, 5 year deal with the Londoners which works out at around £55,000 per week. Well respected Spanish based media outlet Marca said:

El acuerdo entre el club inglés y el jugador está cerrado por cinco temporadas y con un sueldo superior a los tres millones de euros por campaña. El jugador es una petición expresa de Villas Boas, nuevo técnico Blue, y llevará el número 10 en la Premier a la espalda. Con el Valencia la cosa está hecha y sólo falta aclarar algunos conceptos de pago para firmar en breve el acuerdo.

This is translated to:

Mata and Chelsea have already come to an agreement over personal terms, with the player receiving a five-year contract worth over 3M per season. Villas-Boas made a personal request for the transfer, and Mata will be wearing #10 in the Premier League. For Valencia, the transfer is done, with only some questions about the nature of payments left to resolve.

So it seems that the deal is all but done and Mata will be a Chelsea player soon. The 24-year-old was close to signing with Arsenal but the Gunners failed to complete the deal before the end of July when a clause in his contract expired, and the player is reported to have rejected a move to Tottenham this summer as well.

So it seems Chelsea will complete a coup this summer by snapping up one of Europe’s hottest properties.

I agree with you josh. Anelka and malouda really showed how great they are in the game against west brom. they were constantly threatening west brom’s defence and if it was not for those two chelsea would have suffered another humiliation.
I also agree mata is some one that we need. but i doubt neyamar will be even joining us. Well it’s not like he is not a good player infact he is one of the best in the world but the kid keeps on changing his favourite team every week or so
    First it was juventus
    Second it was chelsea
    Third it was real madrid
    Now it is barca

He just doesn’t know what he wants

@kaka.. are you serious? Those were basic goals they scored yesterday. And it was ONE game against a LOW LEVEL TEAM. You can’t judge a player on one game. Malouda has atleast 5 or 6 good games a season then all of a sudden that form is gone.
They need to leave, we can’t keep feeling sorry for them. That’s exactly what Villas Boas did during pre season and that’s why we’re in this position now.

i agree with you about malouda, he is a great player on his day but also a very frustrating player if not. But villas did not feel sorry for anyone in pre season, he was trying out what options he has and also if he will need to bring in any players. Modric would be a great addition plus mata. Neymar is a good player but i could see him sulking if he didnt play well where as mata is constantly working for the team as well as creating chances and showing flair

This information doesn’t seem to spot on considering it says that he will “wear the #10″ yet Benayoun is already wearing that number, and isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

Strictly speaking, he could get #10 and Benayoun be given a different number. Remember when Deco joined? Ferreira had #20 but was changed to #19 for Deco to get #20.

This player is really needed at Chelsea but I hope for alot more movement in the team! Forget modric 35 million is way to much.. Mikel, moulda, and kalou out and some one like hernanes from lazio or luiz from bayern Munich also I would like to see Adam johnson and james rodrigez in a Chelsea shirt

    August 21, 2011 at 6:18 pm

Actually Jake, if you have read any Chelsea articles this weekend you would have seen the one about Benayoun announcing on twitter his future will be made up by weds. Whether that is true or not is a different story, but there should be no reason for a #10 to not start. If i was AVB I would give that number to a actual play maker that is a given starting every game!!

The present crop of chelsea players are redudndant, drogb, especially kalou, malouda plys his best in one game and dis appears in 5 games.we need anry and hungry players.mikel should stay and I say we buy mata, modric, and nasri

Mata would be a good player for chelsea if he could play on the right, due to the fact that Anelka isn’t a natural born winger and Kalou is shocking. A final signing of a player like Modric, Mountinho or Hamsik would be a must aswell

For all those saying we should still get Neymar, I reckon the signings of Mata and Lukaku are proof that we’re not going to get him. As Chelsea and AVB favour a 4-3-3 formation, where would Neymar play, especially if these two get regular first team action? (Which Mata definitely will.) As he’s not an out-and-out striker, Neymar probably won’t play through the middle, especially as we already have Torres, Drogba, Lukaku and Sturridge, and as a left-footer probably won’t play on the wing either as we’ve just signed Mata who is also left-footed along with the left-footed Malouda whom we already have. Modric would be a stellar signing, although I don’t think it’s going to happen now.
