[Player Ratings] Monaco 0-2 Arsenal: Ozil Shines As Gunners Crash Out

By on March 17, 2015

Arsenal came agonisingly close to pulling off a miracle comeback after beating Monaco 2-0 on Tuesday night but it wasn’t enough as we crashed out on away goals.

Here are my ratings:

Ospina  6/10 | A virtual bystander for much of the game. Did everything that was asked when rarely called upon.

Bellerin  7/10 | Saw plenty of the ball down the right wing but didn’t commit his full-back enough and his crossing was disappointing.

Mertesacker  7/10 | Much better display than the first leg as he put in a solid shift at the back. Dominant in the air against Berbatov.

Koscielny  7.5/10 | Marshalled the back line and didn’t give the hosts a sniff when they did decide to attack.

Monreal  7/10 | His cross led to the second goal and he was once again solid in defence. His good form continues.

Coquelin  7/10 | Didn’t have to be at his best as Monaco offered little threat but still did his job admirably before being replaced with 30 minutes to go.

Cazorla  7/10 | Linked up well at times but didn’t really have much of a say in the final third.

Ozil  8/10 | Pulled the strings all game and superb ball over the top released Monreal to set up the second goal. Almost scored with a free kick but could have done better with a good chance that he screwed wide. However, overall he was influential.

Welbeck  7/10 | Excellent in the first half when his pace caused all sorts of problems and he set up the opening goal. Missed a good chance to score a second soon after and faded after the break.

Alexis  6.5/10 | Another pretty poor display from Alexis. His passing was below par and he held on to the ball for too long at times. Unfairly booked for an apparent dive.

Giroud  7.5/10 | Tidy first time finish on his right foot and was a real handful in the first half. Less influential in the second half.

Subs:

Ramsey 7.5/10 | Lovely finish to give us hope. Should probably have started.

Walcott 6.5/10 | Hit the post which led to the second goal but was otherwise fairly anonymous.

Ozil was excellent. Petit & Scholes were slating him at half-time and it is unbelievable this persistent vendetta against him. He was the best player on the park. Alexis was terrible today, constantly giving the ball away, but they attacked Ozil who rarely gave the ball away and was constantly finding the thru ball.

Of course Arsenal failed again and paid for the mistakes in the 1st leg, but anyone who thinks Monaco deserved to go thru is insane. Look at the chances over the two games. Did Monaco even have a shot on target tonight?

There’s no glory in failure – but unlike Chelsea Arsenal played the game the way it should be played, and attacked in both games. Very unlucky.
