Liverpool will look to secure a first leg advantage when they take on Augsburg in Germany in their Europa League last-32 tie tonight.

The Reds got their Premier League campaign back on track with an impressive 6-0 demolition of Aston Villa on Sunday but the Merseysiders will turn their attention to European matter this evening.

Jurgen Klopp’s men eased in to the knockout stages of the Europa League after topping Group B ahead of FC Sion and the German coach has confirmed he’ll take the competition seriously as it’s a viable route to qualifying for the Champions League next season.

Liverpool’s first test is to get past Augsburg – who Klopp will know well from his time with Borussia Dortmund – and the Bundesliga side booked their place in the last 32 after finishing second in Group L.

Team news

Liverpool will be without Adam Lallana tonight as the midfielder is struggling with a calf problem which kept him out of Sunday’s trip to Villa Park.

Kevin Stewart is also out after suffering an ankle injury so he joins Joe Allen, Martin Skrtel, Jordan Rossiter, Danny Ings and Joe Gomez on the sidelines while Dejan Lovren has travelled back to Croatia due to family reasons.

Klopp could make a couple of changes Lucas Leiva back in contention while Steven Caulker could come in to the defence. Kolo Toure and Roberto Firmino are among those who could be given a breather.

Augsburg will be without midfielder Daniel Baier while Jan Moravek, Ji Dong and Jeong-Ho Hong are also set to miss out.

Augsburg 1-2 Liverpool: Inconsistent form has plagued Liverpool all season but they’ve been boosted by the return to fitness of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho in recent weeks. Augsburg have struggled so far this campaign and sit 14th in the Bundesliga table so I can see the Reds bringing home a positive result tonight.
