Paul Merson has made his prediction ahead of Liverpool’s visit to Selhurst Park to take on Crystal Palace on Sunday afternoon.
The Merseysiders head to the capital tomorrow looking to build on their impressive 3-0 victory over Manchester City in midweek, which saw the Reds avenge their Capital One Cup final loss to the Citizens last weekend.
The win also saw Liverpool climb up to eighth in the Premier League table and to within six points of fourth-placed City so Jurgen Klopp is now talking about making a late push for the Champions League qualification places.
Victory at Palace is vital if Liverpool are to maintain their hopes of sneaking a top four finish, and former Arsenal winger Paul Merson is tipping the Reds to come away with a hard fought 2-1 win over at Selhurst tomorrow afternoon.
Writing in his column for Sky Sports, Merson backed Liverpool to see-off an out-of-form Palace side this weekend:
Palace are on that glass slope with slippers on at the moment and they cannot stop sliding, while Liverpool had a great result in midweek and now the race for the top four is wide open.
Liverpool will now be thinking ‘if we can put five wins together, we can finish in the top four’, so it becomes a big game. But they also have that Europa League game in midweek against Man Utd, so it depends how you balance things out. This is a really awkward time for these managers – what do you go for? Do you chase the teams above you in the league or do you go ‘right, if we can beat Man Utd…’?
But I am going to go 2-1 for Liverpool, as after the win against Man City I think they will be flying.
PAUL PREDICTS: 1-2
We’ll have to wait and see whether Merson’s prediction proves to be accurate, but a win for Liverpool would see them keep the pressure on their top four rivals and I think they’ll certainly have to collect all three points this weekend as Manchester City are almost certain to beat relegation-bound Aston Villa at home today.
