Liverpool put one foot in the quarter finals of the Europa League after beating rivals Manchester United 2-0 in their first leg at Anfield on Thursday night.
The Reds were given the perfect opportunity to open the scoring in the 19th minute when Memphis Depay was adjudged to have fouled Nathaniel Clyne in the area and the referee didn’t hesitate in pointing to the spot. Daniel Sturridge took responsibility and stepped up to fire home past David De Gea to put Liverpool in front.
De Gea then kept United in the game with a number of fine saves but the hosts eventually found a way past the Spaniard with Roberto Firmino slotting home for 2-0 after a poor clearance from Chris Smalling in the 77th minute.
United couldn’t get themselves back in the game so Liverpool will now take a 2-0 lead in to the second leg at Old Trafford next week.
