The visitors came flying out the blocks and raced in to a 2-0 lead with Henrikh Mkhitaryan opening the scoring before Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang put Dortmund in control of the tie with a second in the ninth minute.
Liverpool pulled one back just after half time when Divock Origi raced clear to poke home before Dortmund once again restored their two-goal advantage with Marco Reus cut on to his right foot before bending an effort in to the bottom corner for 1-3 on the night, 2-4 on aggregate.
However, Liverpool got themselves back in the game when Philippe Coutinho curled home from the edge of the area in the 65th minute before Mamadou Sakho headed home from close range to send Anfield wild.
With ten minutes remaining and the game at 3-3 on the night and 4-4 on aggregate, Liverpool pushed for the goal they needed to see them through and Dejan Lovren made himself the hero as he headed home James Milner’s cross in stoppage time to book their place in the semi finals with a sensational 5-4 aggregate win.
